In his second year at university, Mutombo impressed with his shot-blocking ability, averaging 2.3 blocks per game and ranking third in the Big East Conference. In his third year, Mutombo continued to excel, averaging 4.7 blocks per game, ranking first in the conference.

After graduating from college, Mutombo entered the NBA draft and was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the fourth overall pick. He had an outstanding rookie season, averaging 16.6 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game, earning him a spot on the All-Star team.
